HYDE PARK

Hyde Park is a historic neighborhood in Central Austin, located north of The University of Texas. It is a wonderful example of what the word neighborhood really means, where neighbors relax on their front porches and you can walk to the local cafe.

Hyde Park was originally developed by Monroe Martin Shipe in 1891 as a streetcar suburb with a large artificial lake, but it has since become a densely populated area in the center of the city. Hyde Park is known for its beautiful and large tree-lined streets, great diversity, and is now home to small, local shops and restaurants. It has retained the sense of community that it had a century ago.

In 1892 sculptor Elisabet Ney built a small castle-style studio, named Formosa, in northwest Hyde Park. The studio is now the home of the Elisabet Ney Museum and a frequent stop on the annual neighborhood home tour.

In recent years, Hyde Park has been revitalized and with its proximity to U.T., it is a very sought-after community. It continues to exert a special appeal for its "fine streets and perfect shade," its mix of Texas Victorian homes and bungalows, and its front-porch friendliness.

LOCATION -- Hyde Park is located north of The University of Texas in Central Austin between 51st Street, 38th Street, Duval, Guadalupe, and Red River (north of 45th Street).  The zip code is 78751.
