EDUCATION -- Leander is the center of the Leander Independent School District. Schools in the city include Leander High School, Wiley Middle School (Bernice Knox Wiley Middle School), Leander Middle School, C C Mason Elementary School, Pleasant Hill Elementary School, Whitestone Elementary School, and Block House Creek Elementary School.
SO, HOW DID LEANDER GETS ITS NAME?
Leander was named after “Leanderthal Lady,” the prehistoric woman whose burial site was discovered in 1982 during construction. Carbon dating suggests “LeAnn” lived over 10,000-13,000 years ago. At the time of the discovery, her site was one of the earliest intact burial sites in the United States.
